Europe/Rome

Four short presentations were shared by Valentina Corato, Pierluigi Bruzzone, Nikolay Bykovskiy and Michael Wolf. A link to upload the presentations will be sent by Valentina to all the participants.

Valentina confirmed the budget allocation and the organization scheme of WPMAG, as anticipated in March 29th. The HTS conductor development is within MAG.T (coordinated by Pierluigi). The related analyses are within MAG.S, presently led by Valentina. About the international collaboration, IC, between EU and CN (quench experiment) it is not yet clear if funds will be available from IC in FP9 to complete the activity - in the worst case, funds from WPMAG will be used to cover the completion of the activities at KIT, ENEA and SPC.

Pierluigi summarized the aim and boundary for the R&D on HTS conductors, stressing the importance of the deadline in 2024 for the down selection of the CS design. The target operating range is 4.5 K, 18 T, 60 kA and 1.5 m bending radius. Tolerable AC loss and heat removal, as well as the projection to long length manufacture must also be accounted in the conductor layout. The RUs willing to propose a prototype conductor are invited to formalize their intention, including a list of steps and schedule, at next meeting, in about four weeks. There is rooms for two SULTAN samples (four prototype conductors), with the option to add one more sample (total six conductors) if enough proposals are presented.

Nikolay reproposed a conductor layout, already presented to WPMAG, consisting of a Röbel cable made of non-twisted stacks. To address the poor mechanical support of the stacks at the edge of the cable, two options are proposed, either with a sharp bend to make the edge transition short, or with a liquid filling of the empty volume (from an old R&D in 1975). A block diagram of the steps is shown, including a subsize conductor for quench experiment. The 3.3mm tape from SST is already available at SPC - no new tape procurement is necessary. The overall R&D including a full size conductor could be completed within one year.

Michael showed the intention of KIT to prepare a prototype conceptually similar to STARS (Yanagi), i.e. three non-twisted stacks encased in a cu profile, oriented along the axis of the CS, with a separate cooling channel. Kamil quoted that Davide may have a similar intention.

Pierluigi commended the KIT proposal, which is very attractive for the robustness and may give an important evidence of non-degraded DC performance.

Giuseppe had no slides but outlined the intention of ENEA of preparing at least one prototype conductor based on the ENEA concept of "slotted Al core". Detail will be given at next meeting.

Next meeting could take place on Tuesday May 11th at 10am (exactly four weeks after April 13th). As alternative dates Thursday May 6th 10 am and Monday May 17th 10 am are proposed (please reply shortly to express your preference).

In the mean time cross comments are welcome about the presentations of yesterday.

Concerning the Task Specifications, the RUs are invited to agree with Valentina a task reflecting the planned activities and considering the budget allocation.
