2021_05_11_meeting

Europe/Rome

Valentina Corato (VC) made a short introduction about the Work Breakdown Structure and the tasks foreseen in the scope of the Hybrid HTS/LTS CS R&D. A directory in Indico is created to store the presentations and other relevant documents from the meetings. The presenters can either upload their documents in Indico or send the documents to Luigi Morici, who maintains the directory. The detail content of the tasks and the resources are agreed between the Research Units (RU) and the Project Leader (PL, Valentina Corato).

Pierluigi Bruzzone (PB), coordinator of the WPMAG Technology, summarised the boundaries for the conductor R&D including the requirements to be targeted and the test in SULTAN of the prototype conductors. The task monitoring scheme foresees a short monthly update (e.g. by email), delivered the last working day of each month by the "speakers" (each prototype has a "speaker") to VC and PB. The speakers are identified as Michael Wolf (KIT), Giuseppe Celentano (ENEA), Nikolay Bykovskiy (SPC) and Davide Uglietti (SPC). Meetings by Videoconference, involving the whole teams (same as May 11th) will be held every 10-12 weeks to discuss technical issue and update/coordinate  the schedule of the various RUs.

Giuseppe Celentano presented the ENEA intentions to provide eventually two prototype conductors, possibly based on both REBCO and BISCCO tapes. An interesting variety of layouts is presented, including twisted and non-twisted stacks, round and rectangular. For each layout a list of pro and cons is provided. ENEA will work closely with the industry (Tratos), paying attention since the beginning to the series manufacture (tooling and tolerance). The selection among the various layout will be carried out within the next months and the required tapes will be ordered within 2021. The prototypes for test in SULTAN are planned to be delivered within the end of 2022.

Michael Wolf presented the task breakdown for KIT, which includes also the completion of the quench experiment sample in 2021, the detailed conductor layout (conceptually based on the STARS conductor layout), trials on sub-size conductors in FBI and the thermal-hydraulic analysis. The tape procurement for the full size conductor will be launched in 2021.

Nikolay Bykovskiy (SPC) confirmed the intention to prepare a Röbel cable made of non-twisted stacks. The layout was already presented at the meeting in April. An additional feature was added, with the stacks placed at ±10º with respect to the CS axis to match at  best the field orientation in the first layer of the various CS modules.

Davide Uglietti (SPC) intends to prepare a prototype conductor based on non-twisted stacks. He claims that his design is well advanced, but he did not disclose any detail at the meeting. He stressed that the AC loss may be a showstopper for the non-twisted designs in the CS and that a thermal-hydraulic analysis is needed before finalising the design.

The next monthly updates are due on June 30th, August 31st, September 30th, November 30th, etc.

The next Videoconferences are scheduled on

- July 23rd, 10am

- October 28th, 10 am

- Yearly meeting of WPMAG (to be scheduled)

Should one of the speakers be not available on the date of the meeting, he should appoint a deputy to present the progress
