EC Funding Trends for R&D in Defence and Security
Luca Fiorani, ENEA
The European Commission’s (EC) funding of defence and security research and development (R&D) has undergone significant changes in recent years. As the global security landscape continues to evolve, the EC has adapted its funding priorities to address emerging threats and challenges. This seminar aims to stimulate discussion on the current trends and future directions of EC defence and security R&D funding. By analysing the allocation of funds within the European Defence Fund (EDF), we identify key areas of focus, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats. This preliminary analysis reveals a shift towards more collaborative and dual-use research initiatives aimed at enhancing the EU’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness in the global defence and security market. This shift has important implications for policymakers, industry stakeholders and researchers trying to navigate the complex landscape of EU defence and security R&D funding.
